Constant weight / CWT

Constant weight with fins Constant weight without fins

It's a royal discipline of freediving. In this discipline the apneist uses only his own strength to swim down and up. It is not permited to make use of the rope to help pull himself, exept when the athlete makes the turn at the bottom to come back up.

The name for this discipline comes from the rule that the diver can't change the weighting by dropping the weights before he starts his way back to the surface.

Constant weight is then divided into two categories:

  • constant weight with fins / CWT
  • constant weight without fins / CNF

Dynamic apnea / DYN

Dynamic apnea with fins

Pool discipline dynamic apnea is also divided into two categories:

  • dynamic apnea with fins / DYN
  • dynamic apnea without fins / DNF
Dynamic apnea without fins

The goal of this discipline is to swim the longest distance on a single breath of air. For dynamic without fins it's better to swim in a shorter pool because an easy turn and then push off the hard wall saves energy.

While for dynamic with fins the turn is more demanding and consumes more energy so it's better to swim in a longer pool to lower the number of turns.

Static apnea / STA

Static apnea

Static apnea is also a pool discipline in which the athletes try to hold their breath for the longest time. The most common position of an apneist is on the surface with his face submerged in the water. The freediver then floats on the water trying to be completely relaxed both physically and mentally.

The wet suit is recommended even in warm water because the apneist usually does a series of apneas and the body with slowed metabolism might get cold  very easily.

Free immersion / FIM

Variable weight

Another discipline where the freediver uses only his strength is Free Immersion. In this discipline the athlete pulls himself down the rope and then back up. Fins cannot be used.

The diver can't change the weight of his belt by dropping it before he starts his way back to the surface just as in constant weight.

Variable weight / VWT

Free immersion

In this discipline the apneist uses a sled or extra weights to get into the depth. It's better to be in a head up position for easier equalization.

After reaching the depth the athlete has to return to the surface only by using his own strength. It means he can pull himself up, use fins or combine both.

No limits / NLT

No limits

No Limits - as the name proclaims - is a discipline without any limitations. That means that for the descent a sled is used for beign more efficient, and for the ascent the athlete uses either an air filled balloon or other flotation device.

Although the greatest depths are achieved in this discipline, the records are not valued much among freediving community.
